Early detection means more time for what matters.

    Why it's worth 30 minutes

    Early detection changes everything

A screening mammogram can find changes in the breast before you can see or feel them. According to Cancer Care Ontario, finding breast cancer early can mean the chance of dying from it is lower, treatment is more likely to work, and fewer, less-invasive treatments may be needed.

A mammogram in Hamilton at Limeworth isn’t just a test — it’s more time, more certainty, and real peace of mind, for a cost of $0.

A landmark change for women 40+

In October 2024, Ontario lowered the breast screening age from 50 to 40.

You no longer need a doctor’s referral. If you’re 40 to 74 with a valid OHIP card and no symptoms, you can book your OBSP mammogram in Hamilton today.

    We understand

Feeling nervous? You're in good company.

Almost every woman who comes in has put this off at least once — because it might hurt, because of what they might find, or because life is busy. That’s normal. Here’s the honest truth about all three.

    "Will it hurt?"

You’ll feel firm pressure for about 20–30 seconds per image — like a snug blood-pressure cuff — then it’s done. Our technologists adjust to your comfort. As one patient put it: “it’s only pressure you feel, not pain.”

    🔎

    "What if they find something?"

Most results are normal. If your first mammogram needs extra images, it’s often just because there’s nothing to compare it to — it usually does not mean cancer. And finding anything early is exactly the point.

    🕊️

    "I don't have time."

It’s about a 30-minute commitment, with Saturday appointments and parking right at the door. Half an hour, for real peace of mind that costs nothing.

The bravest thing you can do for the people who need you is book the appointment.

Mammogram FAQ — Hamilton OBSP screening

Do I need a doctor's referral for an OBSP mammogram in Hamilton?
No. Since October 2024, anyone 40–74 in Ontario with no breast symptoms and no personal history of breast cancer can self-refer. Just request a screening and we’ll book you.
Nothing. OBSP screening mammograms are fully covered by OHIP. Bring your health card.
Plan for about 30 minutes end to end — roughly 10 minutes to register, 15 minutes for your images, and a few to park and settle. The mammogram itself takes only a few minutes.
You’ll feel firm pressure for about 20–30 seconds per image, similar to a tight blood-pressure cuff. Our technologists adjust for your comfort. Many patients tell us it was easier than they expected — “only pressure, not pain.”
A female technologist positions each breast and takes two low-dose images per side. Wear a two-piece outfit, skip deodorant and lotion, and bring your OHIP card. Read our full guide, “What to expect at your first mammogram,” on the Limeworth blog.
Women, Two-Spirit, trans and nonbinary people aged 40–74 with no breast symptoms and no personal history of breast cancer, who haven’t had a screening mammogram in the last 11 months. If transfeminine, having used feminizing hormones for at least 5 years applies.
Yes. Tell us where and roughly when on the form. Comparing your new images to your old ones helps the radiologist spot changes, which improves accuracy. We’ll help request your prior records.
Often yes, with special implant-displacement views. Let us know on the form so we can plan the right imaging and allow a little extra time. Some exceptions apply and we’ll guide you.
Screening is for people without symptoms. If you have a lump, pain, or discharge, please see your doctor for a requisition for a diagnostic mammogram — which we also perform. This ensures you get the right test.
Dense breast tissue is common and normal, but it can make mammograms harder to read and is itself a risk factor. Your radiologist will note your density and may suggest additional imaging. Keep screening on schedule.
Most results are normal. Being called back for more images does not mean you have cancer — it often just means there’s no prior mammogram to compare to, or an area needs a closer look. We notify your provider and help arrange timely follow-up.
For average-risk women, every two years. Your provider may recommend more frequent screening if you’re at higher risk.
Yes. Mammography uses a low dose of radiation and is considered safe — including during pregnancy and lactation, per Cancer Care Ontario. Let us know if you are or may be pregnant.
